One Thing… in Two Words.

OK… I’m stuck on resolutions.  My brain is being bombarded by goals and opportunities for 2012… everyone is talking about setting resolutions.  But guess what?  Half of the people who made resolutions on Sunday have already failed at keeping them!

Those 10 pounds didn’t come off yet so they gave up…  They still crave a cigarette so quitting smoking will have to wait…  They didn’t get up early enough to hit the gym… And it’s only been 6 days!   Why do we expect ourselves to lose weight, get out of debt, stop smoking, stop drinking, exercise more, and spend more time with our family all at the same time?!?  It’s impossible!  The stupid thing about resolutions is that we’ll set the exact same ones next year!

I’m done setting New Year’s Resolutions… they don’t work and I fail every single time.  Empty promises that have no motivation factor…

Here’s an idea that has worked for me… pick one thing and make it your theme for the year.   If there is one thing you want to accomplish, name it.  You don’t have to break it down to where it’s a SMART goal… you know what I’m talking about… Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Blah Blah Blah…  Just come up with two or three easy words that when you say them, you go into goal mode and own your outcome.

Let me give you an example… a couple years ago, my theme for the year was BE BOLD.  My goal was to set high goals when it came to my career and not be a wallflower in situations that demanded more out of me.  So whenever I was put into a situation that I needed to step it up, I told myself to BE BOLD.  I said what needed to be said and did what needed to be done.  I was motivated to go big or go home.

What does your theme need to be for this year?  Watch this before you decide…

How about…

CHASE FREEDOM

BE PATIENT

TAKE A CHANCE

CREATE FUN

ALL IN

JUST DO IT

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

NO MORE TV

The great part about living my boldness for a year is that it’s now a part of me… a habit.  It took a year but I’ve acquired a fantastic value and I can move onto something else for this year… making something else engrained in who I am.  This year??  This year needs to be a year of  action for me so my theme is DO IT NOW.

Leave a comment below and tell me your theme for the year.
