Fear the Worst and Expect the Best

It was the scariest feeling I’ve ever had… riding down Fond Du Lac Street during the 95th anniversary of Harley Davidson. Harley was hosting the biggest biker party in their hometown of Milwaukee, WI and they invited everyone to check out their backyard… even the not-so-nice parts.
The first clue I got that I was in a rough neighborhood was that there were bars on the doors and windows. The second clue was that there were no other bikes and I was definitely a minority. I said a little prayer that God would make all the stop lights green until we could come out safely on the other side. God must have been taking a break when we approached our last set of lights.
There were four of us riding together… my friend, Kris, and two guys we met that week. The deal we made was that if we got separated, the front two would stop and wait for the others to catch up. This was our back-up plan since God was going to keep all the lights green. Well… the light was already turning yellow when the first two went through. Greg and I made it and now we needed to stop. Stop? Are you serious? In “the Hood”??
I looked at Greg… Greg looked at me… we both knew what the other was thinking… should we stop and risk being overpowered by whoever was lurking in the shadows? That was the deal… My vote was that we get to a place that didn’t have bars on the windows… I was wearing a leather bustier for crying out loud! I felt I was a target. Evidently my vote didn’t count and it was the deal we made… we had to be true to the deal.
Well… knowing what I know about God keeping his promises… this was a day He was fulfilling one. Greg and I started to pull to the right to wait for the others and, low and behold, we pulled over next to… wait for it… a POLICE STATION! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Have you ever had that feeling that something could go terribly wrong ? That pit in your stomach signaling something wasn’t right? That you are somewhere that you don’t fit in and everyone is ready to take advantage of you? What was the outcome? Was it as bad as you thought it would be? Probably not but if you’re like me, my initial reaction is one of the worst case… What I find myself doing is thinking about the worst thing that could happen and then I take steps to make sure that it doesn’t happen. A little faith doesn’t hurt either…
