We will never forget…

I’m feeling solemnly patriotic as we approach the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  I still remember where I was when I heard about the fateful attack that day on American soil.  I remember what I was wearing… I remember what I was doing… and I remember thinking that things will never be the same.

It seems to me that the attack spurred unity across the country and we’re all bleeding a bit more red, white, and blue.  No place was this more evident during the 2011 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally than at the Legendary Buffalo Chip.   Click here to watch the Buffalo Chip’s Freedom Celebration 2011.

Finally home from a week in Sturgis and have so much to tell you!! Enjoy these next few posts as I share my experiences at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally!!

For all the times I’d been out to the Sturgis Rally, I thought I’d been at every little hole-in-the-wall bar. Or atleast I’d heard of every little hole-in-the-wall bar. This year I got off the beaten path and stumbled upon a fantastic find… a gem of a place… the Stone House Saloon.

We’ve come a long way, baby… it’s not just a cigarette slogan but a banner for all women motorcyclists. Oh yes… we have come a long way.

Back to the years of Effie and Avis Hotchkiss, women have defied the norm and taken up motorcycling as a sport… as a way of life. And thanks to all the strong, passionate women who have gone before me, I, too will take my place in line.

Sturgis Rally Ride #1 – Iron Mountain Road

0

If you like roller coasters, you’re going to LOVE Iron Mountain Road! Iron Mountain Road is to the Black Hills as Superman – Ride of Steel is to Six Flags. This thrill seeking ride is my #1 ‘Must-Take’ ride of the Black Hills – Iron Mountain Road.

Some roller coasters are designed with loops where the tracks appear to overlay one another in a figure 8. Luckily, Iron Mountain Road doesn’t have figure 8 curves but it does have hair-pin turns. When you’re at the bottom of the mountain, be sure to look up as you ascend and you’ll see the road snaking back and forth. It almost appears to be a figure 8. These turns are super sharp and can only be manuvered at very low speeds.

Sturgis Rally Ride #2 – Needles Highway

0

Imagine yourself riding on a tour bus when the bus driver suddenly stops before entering a tunnel. He exits the bus and proceeds to fold the side mirrors into the body of the bus. As you proceed through the 8 foot 4 inch tunnel, the driver expertly manuvers the bus so that the folded mirrors are barely touching the rock walls. Yep… you’re on my number 2 Top 5 Must-Take rides in the Black Hills – Needles Highway.

Tour bus exiting Needles tunnel

Needles Highway is 14 miles of granite spires reaching towards the sky. You’ll feel like an ant among giants as you weave through the rocks that seem to grow straight up out of the ground.
