2012 – The Year of the Sunsets

7

Are you so busy… running frantically…  that you don’t even notice the little, magnificent things that are right under your nose?

Here’s a typical drive home for me – sitting bumper to bumper in traffic… frustrated by the guy that just cut me off… thinking about what to make for supper… remembering that there is nothing in the cupboards…  checking my texts while at a way-too-long stop light… trying to remember what I forgot to do today… and I completely miss the fiery sunset God has painted in the sky for me!

Sunset #1

This sunset is His glowing signature that He’s signing off at the end of my day… telling me that it’s time to let go and take my focus away from the busyness of life and put it on the things that matter most.  He is reminding me to slow down and marvel in the little things that are so much bigger than me.  Yes… the little things that are bigger than me.  It’s free entertainment with an eternal promise!

I don’t want to miss anymore sunsets!

My goal this year is to take pictures of 50 sunsets.  Other people collect stamps… I’m collecting photos of sunsets.  The best thing… my kids are in on it too.  This goal is two-fold… it will force me to pick my head up, draw my eyes upward, and take time to thank the good Lord for blessing me.  It will also bring us together as a family as we gather at dusk to see if this anticipated sunset is better than the last.

This evening, my 6 year old daughter and I saw the pink and purple glow just as the sun was setting over our neighborhood.  There were too many houses in the way to see the whole thing and we were going to run out of time!  The colors would soon be gone!  So we jumped in the truck and started chasing the sun… beating it to the horizon.  ”Mom!  Here’s a great picture!”  ”Mom!  Look at the sunset from here!”  ”Wow…”  We caught it in time to share these photos with you…

My kids are 6 and 9.  They should still be 2 and 5.  We should have been watching more sunsets.   What can you do this year to force yourself to slow down and drink in God’s glory?  What goal can you set with your kids so they are chasing after something?  THIS is the Year of the Sunsets for the Brouwer family. One down… atleast 49 to go!

Regina – Thanks for posting beautiful sunsets on my FB page! Love seeing the purples and pinks! Maybe next year I’ll do the sunrises – except I’m not a morning person so that’ll be a REAL challenge! Share your new photos with me and enjoy your quiet time!

  7. Lisa says:

Regina – I’d have to add them here. Email some to me and I’ll work up a blog post of them… maybe jot down a few notes for me that explain what you learned or what you were doing when you caught the sunset. Riding a new road… hanging out with friends… give me a story and I’ll get it out there! Thanks!!
